TIMELINE
The UMCH Teaching Hospital Days are held once a year. In 2026, they took place on March 5 and 6, 2026.
DEPARTMENTS
The main part of the event took place on the UMFST-UMCH campus, specifically at the Medical Education Center (HRI) of the teaching hospital facilities. There were also activities or connections to the Hamburg location, as the event was intended to strengthen academic and clinical collaboration between the two sites.
ACADEMICS
The event was a two-day conference aimed at medical students, offering opportunities for networking, clinical insights, and exchange between the university hospitals.
A Vast Network of Teaching Hospitals and Practices
From the third year of study, UMFST-UMCH students undergo their clinical-practical training in a network of over 30 teaching hospitals and practices. This training includes practical activities, such as assisting in surgeries under the guidance of experienced professionals, and may also take place in international institutions, such as in Spain, where knowledge of the local language is required. The combination of theoretical lessons on campus in Hamburg and the practical phases in teaching hospitals enables a close link between theory and practice. The study program lasts six years, with the first two years dedicated to pre-clinical studies and the last four years focused on the clinical phase.

EDUCATION
From the third year of study, UMFST-UMCH students undergo their clinical-practical training in over 30 renowned teaching hospitals across Germany. Here, they gain valuable practical experience under the guidance of experienced professionals, benefiting from a close integration of theory and practice.

INTERNATIONAL
In addition to our nationwide network of teaching hospitals in Germany, we also collaborate with several hospitals and clinics in Spain. This offers students the opportunity to gain insights into other healthcare systems and cultures. The number of institutions, both domestically and internationally, where students can experience bedside teaching during the clinical phase of their studies continues to grow.

RESEARCH
From the third year onwards, our students acquire comprehensive practical skills and undergo their clinical-practical training in teaching practices and clinics, as well as with other medical partners. Through collaboration with these partners, we offer our students hands-on training and valuable experience in various medical fields.

Theory and practice hand in hand
A central strength of UMFST-UMCH is its collaboration with over 30 teaching hospitals across Germany. These partnerships enable a balanced combination of theoretical instruction on the Hamburg campus and practical training phases.
From the third year onwards, students spend 8 to 16 weeks per year in certified teaching hospitals, where theoretical training is immediately applied to clinical practice. This intensive integration into clinical routines provides students with valuable experiences. The use of teaching practices additionally imparts knowledge in practice management and introduces students to professions in outpatient care, such as general medicine, ophthalmology, and dermatology.
